CJ’s teacher suggested moving CJ to a lower spelling group–from the grapes to the bananas, I think.
That didn’t sit well with CJ’s mommy. “How could our kid be a bad speller?” she texted me. “I’m not putting her in the banannas group!”
So I introduced CJ to Scrabble. It had been a long time. “Look at the picture on this box,” I said. “This must be from when Mommy and I were kids.”

“How can you tell?” CJ asked.
“The sweaters, the hairstyles.” The unapologetic lack of diversity. The parents who look their age. Well, at least the dad….
“But Daddy,” CJ said, “it’s in color! If it was from when you were little, it would be in black and white.”
